GAP BETWEEN CHURCH TEACHING AND PRACTICE |
|||
| Citing scripture and the practices of the early Church, Fr. Crosby made a case for today′s Church existing in circumstances similar to Judaism at the time of Christ. The Roman Empire reflected the imperialism of its day as does the United States today, and Judaism, with its power elite, emphasis upon ritual and law, and exclusivity, reflects the same characteristics in today′s Roman Catholic Church. He called for a return to a Church that reflects the Reign of God, a Church which is inclusive, and where Jesus has primacy. Fr. Crosby also made the point that the sexual abuse crisis was rooted in the continuing systemic abuse of power in the current hierarchical structure of the Church. While the sexual abuse issue may be waning, the root causes are still in place. The presentation was sponsored by the Roncalli Society. |
